New Zealand is not part of the formal RS process as it has been developed for the transfer of young people between Australian states and territories only.  NZ cannot enforce laws or penalties of any other country (at this point in time) as it is not enabled by any current legislation.  However, where you have a young person who is a NZ citizen in the Australian youth justice system wanting to go back to NZ below are two interim options to follow proposed by NZ:

  1. Contact a central person (the NZ RS contact above) to ensure that NZ knows the details of the situation and can then liaise with the sites and police so that NZ are acquainted with the potential risk.
  2. Ring the National Call Centre (0508 326 459) and make a notification of concern and then that may be be referred to the site.

In either case NZ would expect to know:

Name

Date of Birth

Proposed residential address

In whose care the young person is to be placed

Nature of offending

Court outcome/sentence

Contact person in Australia responsible for sentence management.
